In Dreams Between Darkness, Brian Sostrom offers paintings inspired by the atmosphere, light, and the powerful forces of nature. He translates vast swathes of sea and sky into mesmerizing images of transcendent beauty in this collection of imagined landscapes and emotional dreamscapes. These immersive works entice the viewer with a shimmering invitation to enter their luminous expanse, float in a crystalline sea or drift into an endless sky.

Sostrom uses a proprietary technique developed over many years of experimentation to capture the reflected light dancing through waves and clouds. He builds translucent depths by working in diaphanous layers of acrylic paint and mixed media over panels coated with resin. The finished works present gleaming surfaces that belie his vigorous mark-making with palette knives, squeegees, and various tools.

Now residing in Idaho, Sostrom spent his childhood in small rural towns throughout the Pacific Northwest, and his fondest memories are of the tranquility of nature. His father, an engineer for the National Forest Service, and part-time artist, introduced him to painting at the age of nine. He went on to achieve his BFA at Washington State University and for over a decade has been consistently exhibiting in gallery shows throughout the nation. This is his second solo show at RiverSea Gallery.
